With annual carbon emissions now exceeding 40 billion tonnes, all known schemes for carbon removal or global warming control amount to little more than futile efforts. Against this background, I propose a low‑cost, permanent solution to cool the Earth. Simply put, by placing rocks, constructing dams, or installing underwater current turbine generator units at key locations such as the Bering Strait where ocean currents flow into and out of the Arctic Ocean, we can reduce the inflow of warm currents into the Arctic. This will increase the area of Arctic sea ice. Since ice has a strong reflective effect on sunlight, the Earth will absorb less heat, and ocean and atmospheric temperatures will decrease accordingly. This will not only prevent the release of carbon dioxide and methane from the seabed and permafrost, but also enhance carbon sequestration in permafrost and marine sediments.
